Serve

For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve...

- Mark 10:45
Jesus taught that there is only one way - the Jesus Christ way of self-sacrificing action. It is God's way of love in us and in the end it is the actions that matter..

Current Needs

Bridge of Hope partnership and training - Saturday September 21 9am
SUMC is partnering with Bridge of Hope to supply neighborhood volunteers. Bridge of Hope provides rental assistance for permanent housing and case management services to help families facing homelessness find long-term financial and housing stability.  Donations provide the funds needed to enable a long term solution to homelessness.  A mother located in Stewartstown wants to make a connection within her neighborhood.  Being a part of this group allows us to be a part of the Bridge of Hope neighborhood support. What do we do as neighboring volunteers?  Open our hearts- give support and build a relationship, Open our hands- offer tangible, practical support (meals, transportation, furnishing, etc.), Open Doors- use our personal and professional networks to help a family find housing, employment, medical providers, etc. Anyone can be a neighboring volunteer with each and everyone of us bringing something to this group that will help these families in need.
To be able to be the support we need to participate in a 5 hour training which will be held at SUMC starting at 9am with a break for lunch.
We sometimes feel that volunteering sounds overwhelming, but it’s the small things that count and have an impact.
Helping Hands for the Homeless - Donate clothing, help prepare food and serve. Saturday September 28.
Backpack Ministry—we have 2 openings for people to pack food on a rotating schedule.  This is once a month, Tuesday, from 6:30-7:00 pm.
Toddlers & Twos Class—needs a Leader and Helper.  We are proposing that this be a rotating schedule.  If several adults could serve for only one month at a time, I believe the continuity that would provide (rather than a weekly rotation) would be beneficial to these little ones.  The curriculum is very easy.
Kindergarten Class—needs a leader; we have an assistant.  This consists of bringing the children to large group and then leading a 25-min small group time.
This would be weekly, September to May.  We have subs who can cover when you need to be out.
“Kids Break-out” session—We are looking for 3 more leaders (we have one) who are willing once a month to lead this new K-5th grade time during the sermon part of worship.  This is not Children’s Church.  It is a short time leading an activity that correlates with our earlier Kids Connection lesson.  It will be an activity from our curriculum that is provided for you.  A teen helper is needed each week as well (serving once a month).
Volunteer Cleaning - We are in need of a few volunteers that would be willing to donate about an hour a week to help clean the church. Some of our faithful volunteers have retired. You can pretty much set your own schedule as long as there are no scheduling conflicts. Areas we could use a little help include: Children's Classrooms, Sanctuary, Youth room, Kitchen. Car Ministry - is always accepting donations but there is a current need.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

- Matthew 6:21

Why we give.

God is generous and so he calls us to be as well.  What we do with what God has given us shows the world where our hearts are at and helps proclaim the gospel. We want to glorify God with every area of our lives, and that includes what we do with our finances.
